UPSC examinations follow a definite structure of conducting the examinations which has remained unchanged over many years. There are three phases in taking the test; first being the preliminary or prelims which consists of two papers for testing basic and general knowledge of candidates, each of two hundred marks each. After selection in prelims comes the Mains in which the candidate has to write nine papers; two optional subjects, four General Studies, two language papers and one essay paper, each of two fifty marks. If a candidate qualifies for the third round, he has to take the interview or personality test, the final phase of the UPSC examination.
The nine papers in the Mains exam of the UPSC examination is completely theory based and needs long answers. The papers are evaluated on merit basis and one needs to have a catchy and firm grip over writing to secure good and qualifying marks. Moreover the essay paper is solely based on writing skills and grammar, so for any UPSC or IAS aspirant it is important to practice writing to improve and sharpen writing and grammar skills. The UPSC and IAS coaching centres offer extra courses for language and essay papers, it would be convenient for the candidates to get enrolled in any of such courses and go through practice daily. The regional language paper needs extra attention and care for it is important to learn to read, write and speak in a local language for any administrative or civil service officer. Coaching centres for UPSC entrance training give extra lessons on writing papers and help a student evaluate his writing skills.
